Public Benefits

The Mississippi Center for Justice combines legal, policy, and community action to advance racial and economic justice in health, food security, and economic stability statewide.

Protecting and Strengthening Public Benefit Programs

The Mississippi Center for Justice provides direct legal support and community outreach to ensure that eligible Mississippians can access the public benefits to which they are legally entitled, with a focus on Medicaid, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). Our team also advocates for legal, regulatory, and policy reforms to protect, strengthen, and expand access to these vital programs.

Ending Hunger and Strengthening Food Security for All

Food security—the condition in which all people at all times have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs for an active and healthy life—is essential to building healthy, equitable, and resilient communities for all. Yet today, 1 in 5 Mississippians and 1 in 4 children statewide are food insecure and struggle with hunger—the highest rates nationally. Food insecurity contributes to the overwhelming and inequitable burden of chronic health conditions in Mississippi and undermines the physical and mental health, cognitive development, academic achievement, and future economic success of children. In order to achieve food security for all Mississippians, we must address the racial and economic injustices at the root of this crisis.

The Mississippi Center for Justice is working to end hunger and strengthen food security for all through intersectoral and systemic change. Our team works with advocacy, community-, and faith-based organizations; government officials and practitioners; health, social service, and food system professionals; and community members to develop statewide advocacy capacity and advance legal and policy solutions to our food insecurity crisis.
