Local Nonprofits Hold Community Oil Disaster Education Event

Local community groups including Vietnamese American nonprofits will provide legal advice and information about recovery resources. Information will be available in Vietnamese language and English.

(Biloxi) – Asian Americans for Change (AAC,) Mercy Housing, Mississippi Center for Justice, the National Alliance of Vietnamese American Service Agencies (NAVASA), Vietnamese American Bar Association of Northern California (VABANC) and the Steps Coalition are holding a community education event Friday, June 25, from Noon to 4 p.m. at the Biloxi Community Development Department Auditorium located at 676 Martin Luther King Boulevard. 

The free clinic is designed to help families, fishermen and women, and other related small businesses impacted by the oil disaster. Nonprofit representatives will be available to speak one-on-one with the community, to clarify misinformation, and to provide materials regarding oil recovery. Attorneys with the Mississippi Center for Justice and volunteer attorneys with the Vietnamese American Bar Association of Northern California will be available to advise individuals about insurance, BP claims and contracts, what it means and what to watch out for if participating in a class action or other lawsuit, and any other oil-related legal issues. BP and government agencies are also invited to attend.
