Lawsuits Filed Against Deceptive Student Loan Lenders

Thank you to all who provided information to MCJ regarding their student loan experiences with Navient and Sallie Mae. The information was helpful in our investigation of unfair and deceptive conduct by Navient and Sallie Mae in the servicing and origination of student loans. On July 17, 2018, Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood along with MCJ filed a lawsuit against Navient. In the lawsuit, the Attorney General charges Navient and two related companies with deceptive and unfair practices in violation of Mississippi’s consumer protection laws. The lawsuit seeks, among other things, an injunction requiring these companies to change their practices.

Importantly, the Attorney General's lawsuit is not a consumer class action. Consumers have filed nationwide class action lawsuits against Navient, Sallie Mae, and other loan servicing companies. Additionally, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau also has filed a lawsuit seeking restitution and damages for consumers. For information about the CFPB's lawsuit, please click here.
