POLICY: Economic Justice

MCJ’s Consumer Legal Resource Center (CLRC) serves three missision areas: legal education and support, public advocacy, and impact litigation.

In the realm of legal education and support, the CLRC provides on the ground support for partner-sponsored CLE and general training events; develops “attorney-help” materials, model pleadings, and detailed intake forms for a variety of consumer claims; and, serves as a litigation support resource for partner attorneys and organizations.

On the public advocacy front, the CLRC monitors local print and other media throughout the state for consumer-related content; develops and submits pro-consumer opinion pieces and story ideas to media contacts; reaches out to both traditional and non-traditional partner organizations and stakeholders to advance consumer interests; and, addvocates in local, state, and federal for a for the enactment of pro-consumer reforms.

Finally, with respect to impact litigation, the CLRC partners with local and national experts in the consumer field to identify issues susceptible to court-imposed reform; develops and prosecute test cases; serves as local counsel for national partners in consumer-related litigation; and, offers assistance to partner attorneys and organizations in the prosecution of consumer-related appeals before the Mississippi Supreme Court.

All of the CLRC’s activities are geared toward developing not only pro-consumer legal capacity in the public and private bar but also consumer consciousness in the media and official policymaking organs.
